These blankets are very plush and comfy and honestly, they work up really quickly. I’ve created a YouTube tutorial that I hope is helpful. Their size can be easily modified based on your needs.
What You Will Need:
- 4 Skeins of Bernat Blanket Yarn
- Size P (12mm) or Q (16mm) Crochet Hook
- Blankets- Blue and Gray- Measure 47 wide x 48 (using size P) and Pink and Orange- Measure 59 wide x 60 (using size Q hook)
Written Instructions- Crochet Blanket Beginner Project
- Using the Bernat Blanket yarn make a slip knot. Tighten around the hook.
- Chain 70 chains (approx. 47 inches using the P hook and 59 inches using the Q hook). Be sure to not pull your yarn too tight around your hook or it will be difficult to work the stitches in the foundation chain.
- Rows 2 – Ch 2 and place a Half Double Crochet (hdc) in 3rd chain from hook and repeat the hdc in each chain, all the way down the foundation chain. Remember to not pull too tight or your chain will become too tight to work into effectively
- At the end of the row, chain (Ch) 2 and turn your work.
- Row 3-70 or (the length of your blanket)- HDC in 2nd stitch, remember to skip the first chain from the hook, continue in each stitch. Be sure to complete a hdc in the last turning chain stitch.
- Continue this process until you reach the end of your first skein. (Once your yarn runs out, tie the end of the yarn with the beginning of the new skein of yarn) and continue.
- This project uses 4 skeins of yarn (but can vary based on the size of blanket
- Weave in all the ends

Additional Information
The blue and gray blanket used the same type of yarn and have the same foundation change; however, I used a size P crochet hook. This blanket was more compact and it had smaller holes. Whereas, the pink and orange blanket (pictured below), I used the same Bernat yarn and the same foundation chain, of 70, but I used a size Q crochet hook. This blanket was larger and it had wider holes.
These are the coziest blankets I’ve ever made. I was able to complete each one, over the course of 2 weeks, working on them in the evening for about an hour or so. I hope you enjoy making this easy, crochet blanket beginner project as much as I did.

Hi Felicia, I’m making the blue blanket. I wondered after you ch 70 and ch 2 and crochet in 3rd ch from hook how many HDR should I have at the end of the row?? Also when I ch 2 turn my work do I always go into the 3rd ch?

Hi Renea, Thanks for stopping by my blog. I didn’t count that stitches but I believe I had 69,you’ll create 68 hdc and the chain 2 will count as a stitch for a total of 69… I hope that makes sense. When you chain 2 and turn your work you’ll put a stitch in the second stitch in the row. Skip the first space and place your stitch in the second space. I hope this answers your questions. If I want to double the dimensions, do I have to double the 2 chains at the end of the 70 (140 if doubled) to 4? And do I still go into the 3rd existing loop?

Really enjoyed your post on the blanketvfor beginners. I am just beginner to crochet. I hafe no problem with doing the chain stitches. But when I do the half double crochet I seemcto lose a lot of the stitches. For eg I would do say 80 chain stitches so when I do the other stitches I have lost about 5-8 of the stitches so the blanket is uneven. What am I doing wrong? Quite frustrating. Regards. Hi Susan, you need to get comfortable counting your stitches. When you make your chain stitch there are two sides a bumpy side and a side that looks like a ‘V’. Count the V’s this will help you make sure you get enough stitches in the row. Also make sure you are putting a stitch in the chain. I discuss this some in both blanket videos. I understand the frustration; I would start a smaller project, like a scarf so you can get use to counting your stitches. I’m trying to get some more videos up on my youtube channel that may be able to help. Good Luck.
sometimes after 2 or 3 rows I will mark the stitches every 10/15 so I can keep up until I get going. I use safety pins but I think you can actually buy “stitch counters”. just a suggestions.
That’s a good idea. Safety pins are very cost effective and they get the job done.

I just wanted to add that U can find these skeins of yarn @ a Walmart store if U have one close to U. Also, U can go to Walmart.com online & these yarns can be ordered & delivered to your home w/ no shipping charges if U spend over $50. The other way is that U can pick them up @ the Walmart store that is closest to U. An important note is that there is No shipping charges at all when U pick them up @ a Walmart store no matter how many skeins U order. I love your videos because, U go slow enough for me to can write down pattern so, I have a copy. We do not have a printer so, when I watch your videos for the first time I write the pattern down as U go. I can also go to where U have the pattern & write it down that way. In your videos U go slow enough to pause the video go slow enough so I can write the pattern down then, I have a copy for later when I want to make another blanket down the road. I like having a written copy so, then I don’t have to try & remember who crocheted that pattern that I liked. I write it down on a notebook paper & I put them in the plastic sleeve to keep them so they stay clean & with dividers & Voila it’s a crochet recipe notebook. Thanks for having a written pattern w/ your videos because, some don’t have one we can follow along. U are exceptional as an instructor & I am so pleased that I found U by total accident. My Mom taught me how to crochet at a young age & after I raised my children I wanted to start it again. It was almost like starting new although, I really did remember the the basic stitches after a refresher. There were many stitches that were totally new as I had never done them before. Thanks again so much for your fantastic video teachings.

you make this seem so super easy with how detailed you are! you don’t assume that we as viewers have any idea what we are doing which is perfect for a complete newbie like me! ill be attempting to start this project this week. my question is-when you run out of one ball of yarn and need to add in the next ball of yarn-how exactly is that done? thank you!!
Hello Lindsay, for this project I just tie my two strands of yarn (my working yarn and my new ball of yarn) together, and keep crocheting as usual. Some people don’t like to tie them together but sometimes it’s just more secure. Hope it helped!

Hi I’m having a hard time w this easy baby blanket. II changed 41 to start because I wanted it to be a smaller blanket. As I went along the blanket keep getting smaller in the width?? What am I doing wrong??
Shrinking can be a common problem when you first start a project. This step may seen a little tedious, at first but you may want to count your stitches as you go down the row. You’ll only have to do this a few times to make sure you are getting the same number of stitches in each row. Also make sure your are relaxed and making your stitches the same size. Sometimes this can cause your project to look like it’s shrinking. Stretching your project, as you go along may help too. Ooh… section 16:56, in the video, make sure you are doing this step too :-). Sorry for the delay in responding. You’ve probably figured out how to end it by now…regards. When you run out of yarn just tie the end of the first roll of yarn with the begin from the second roll of yarn. I show an example in my ‘how to crochet a double pocket scarf’ tutorial (towards the middle of the video) and my ‘how to crochet a purse’ tutorial. Hope they can help. So just tie the yarn ends together and keep on going
Hi !! Thanks for the great video. I noticed in the comments you mentioned using 3 or 4 skeins. Which amount is better to get 3 or 4? Id like to make a blanket to cover my body for my living room in white, teal and grey. If 4 is better, I would need two of one color, what would you recommend? Thanks!!

I would suggest counting the stitches in each row, to make sure you have the same number in each row. I hope this helps.
If you don’t have a crochet hook that is 10 mm or 12 mm and you use an 8 mm, how many more chain stitches did you have to do at the start?
Hi There. I’m not sure. The best thing to do is to complete a foundation chain, ending in an even number, and then measure it to see if it is the size you want. The foundation chain is width of you blanket. I hope this help.

Hello, Thank you. Yes to edge you blanket you can use the same crochet hook and you’ll need about a skein of yarn, pending on the size of the blanket. This explains exactly my dilemma with a blanket I’ve been trying to make. The edges come out all wonky. I’ve watched alot of videos and this is one of the better ones. Fantastic videos!! Absolutely so grateful for your video. Now, I can do what I found out is called frogging a project??? Not sure where that cones from. I just say take apart and redo it correctly. If I want to double the dimensions from 70 to 140, do I need to double the end two loops to four? And when it comes to incorporating to the 3rd existing loop, do I maintain that pattern?
Hi! The pattern would remain the same, you would just increase your starting chain and then continue working the original pattern. Making sure you have the same number if stitches in each row. Also keep in mind, if you increase the foundation chain the blanket will be wider you’ll need to increase the number of rows too, if you want it to remain a square. Good Luck with your project🙂
